Bedding Guide & FAQ
Bedding Questions? We've Got You Covered!
Everything you need to know to shop, sleep and care for your bedding with confidence.
How do I know what size bedding I need?
Getting the right fit makes all the difference!
- Measure the length and width of your mattress to confirm its size.
- Measure the depth of your mattress, including any mattress toppers or protective padding. If your mattress is extra deep, you may need Deep Pocket sheets rather than standard sheets.
- Look for fitted sheets that accommodate your mattress depth, and flat sheets that are large enough to tuck comfortably underneath.
What is the difference between a duvet and a comforter?
- A duvet is a two part system consisting of a flat, fluffy inner blanket (the insert) and a removeable, washable outer shell (the duvet cover) that buttons, snaps or ties closed.
- This is a great option if you like swap out the cover for a new look, or switch the insert for a heavier or thinner option seasonally.
- A comforter is a single, thicker, pre-filled piece of bedding with the decorative fabric and inner filling sewn together as one unit. It is bulkier to wash as well.
Should I size up my comforter or duvet?
- Absolutely! If you love that extra-cozy feeling, consider sizing up your comforter or duvet.
- For example, a King size comforter on a Queen size bed gives you extra fabric hanging over the sides, helping keep your shoulders covered and providing a little extra room to snuggle. Just remember to choose a duvet cover that fits your duvet insert!
Thread Count – What Is It, and Does It Matter?
Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric.
- It applies to woven fabrics, such as cotton and rayon/viscose.
- A higher thread count generally means a denser fabric, which can feel heavier and smoother.
- Good-quality sheets can be found in a variety of thread counts. For cotton sheets, the 200 - 600 range is often a good place to start.
- Thread count isn't everything! The quality of the fibres, the type of weave and the finish all contribute to how sheets feel and perform.
What Is the Best Bedding for Hot Sleepers or Night Sweats?
If you tend to sleep hot, choosing breathable bedding and lighter layers can make a difference.
- Avoid overly heavy or dense bedding if you find it traps too much heat.
- Choose a breathable mattress protector and a lightweight comforter or duvet so you can easily adjust your layers throughout the night.
- Bamboo-derived rayon/viscose sheets are popular with hot sleepers because they feel silky, soft and comfortable against the skin.
- Some people prefer natural fibres for both their bedding and sleepwear.
Everyone sleeps differently, so finding what feels comfortable for you is key!
How Often Should I Wash My Sheets?
- A good rule of thumb is once a week.
- If you have allergies, asthma, night sweats or pets sleeping in your bed, you may want to wash your bedding more frequently.
- And if you have been sick, it's a good idea to wash your bedding when you're feeling better and ready to change your sheets.
How Do I Keep My Sheets Looking New?
A little extra care can go a long way toward keeping your bedding soft and beautiful!
- Follow the care instructions on your bedding.
- Use a gentle wash cycle and a mild detergent.
- Avoid unnecessarily high water temperatures, which can contribute to fading and fibre wear.
- Skip the fabric softener! It can leave residue on fabrics over time and affect their natural feel and absorbency.
- Avoid overloading your washing machine so your sheets have plenty of room to move.
- Tumble dry on a low setting or hang to dry when possible.
Your sheets will thank you!
How Often Should I Wash My Pillows?
Your pillows deserve a little TLC, too!
- Pillow protectors should generally be washed monthly, or more often if needed.
- Wash your actual pillows every three to six months, provided they are washable.
- Consider replacing your pillows every one to two years, depending on their condition and material.
- A quick test: Fold your pillow in half. If it doesn't spring back, it may be time for a replacement!
A few pillow-washing tips:
- Always check the manufacturer's care instructions first.
- If machine washable, wash two pillows at a time to help balance your machine.
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent.
- Tumble dry on low heat, using dryer balls to help fluff them up.
- Make sure your pillows are completely dry before putting them back on your bed.
